Visitors who travel to North Sulawesi Province of Indonesia can take a birding tour to forest and farmland at the outskirts of Manado city that watch such birds as Pacific Swallow, Pale Blue Monarch, Sahul Sunbird, Sulawesi Crow, Gray-sided Flowerpecker, Yellow-sided Flowerpecker, Sulawesi Hanging Parrot, Collared Kingfisher, White-rumped Triller, Green Imperial Pigeon, Black-napeeld Fruit-dove and etc.
Manado city may not be the best place for birdwatchers due to the size of the city and the density of its population. However, its suburban area is still good for birdwatching and insect watching.

Various species of butterflies could be watched at the outskirts of Manado city. They include Celebes-banded Swallowtail (Papilio gigon), Lime Swallowtail (Papilio demoleus), The Clipper (Parthenos sylvia), The Common Birdwing (Troides helena), Blanchard's Tree Nymph (Idea blanchardii), Blanchard's Wood Nymph (Ideopsis vitrea), and etc.

To take pictures of birds and butterflies, visitors need to bring camera with telephoto lens. Some birdwatchers use bridge camera such as the Nikon Coolpix P1000 or Canon SX70HS. More professional wildlife photographers usually bring D-SLR or Mirrorless cameras with 150 to 600 mm telephoto lens.
After taking the birdwatching and butterfly watchibg trip in Manado city, visitors could continue their trip to Minahasa highland and do birding in Mount Mahawu, Lake Linow, Sonder farm forest and rice field.
More interesting birds could be seen in Mount Mahawu. There are Sulawesi Cuckoo-dove, Superb Fruit-dove, Warbling White-eye, Turquoise Flycatcher and Sulawesi Blue Flycatcher.

In Subdistrict Sonder, the birds that can be watched include Pale Blue Monarch, Black-naped Oriole, Sooty-headed Bulbul, Crimson Sunbird, Black Sunbird, Pygmy Hanging Parrot, Sulawesi Hanging Parrot, Crimson-crowned Hanging Parrot, Citrine Canary Flycatcher, Black-crownes White-eye, and etc.
