There are 2 species of hornbill in Sulawesi and its satellite islands:

  • Sulawesi Hornbill or Sulawesi Dwarf Hornbill (Rhabdotorrhinus exhartus). It is a small hornbill with a length of around 45 cm (approx. 18 inches). This bird feeds on fruits, and insect. The male bird has got bright yellow face and throat. The female one has got black feather. Female Sulawesi Hornbill lays eggs in a sealed tree hole. Food is supplied by her male partner through the hole.
  • Knobbed Hornbill (Rhyticeros cassidix) is a big hornbill that lives in lowland and lower montane forest of Sulawesi island. It eats fruits, and insects. The male one has got black feather, white tail and yellow bill and red casque that looks like the red horse hair crest of an ancient Roman soldier.

I saw these hornbills in several parts of Sulawesi such as Karaenta, Lore Lindu, Tangkoko and Tambun.

Because I often guide tourists in North Sulawesi, Tangkoko Nature Reserve, Temboan hill is the site where I frequently see these hornbills.
