Sonder is a small subdistrict town in Minahasa regency, the Province of North Sulawesi of Indonesia. According to BPS (The Central Statistics Agency of Minahasa regency), there are 20,003 people in 2024. There 19 villages in Subdistrict Sonder.

Most of the inhabitants of Sonder are involved in agriculture. They grow rice, chilli, tomato, aubergine, vanilla, water spinach (locally called kangkung), corn, spring onion, shallots, avocado, durian, coconut, pumpkin and also flowers. In 2023, farmers in Sonder produce 42,400 kilograma of chillis and 2,100 kilograms of kangkung. Most of their agricultural produce are sold in local traditional market, in Tomohon town, and Manado city.

Sonder is located in the highland of Minahasa. Its cool temperature and volcanic soil is suitable environment for planting decorative plants. Farmers grow orchid, chrysantemum, rose, tuberose, lily flower, laceleaf (anthurium), heliconia, sanseviera, palm, bougainvillea, aglaonema, ixora, philodendron, and etc.
Birdwatching Tourism
The farm forest, waterfalls, rice paddies and hill forest of Subdistrict Sonder are the habitat of a lot of species of tropical birds. Some of them include Sulawesi Blue Flycatcher, Sulawesi Myzomela, Sulawesi Cuckoo-dove, Pale Blue Monarch, Japanese White-eye, Black-crowned White-eye, Sulawesi Hanging Parrot, Pygmy Hanging Parrot, Sulawesi Pygmy Woodpecker, Crimson Sunbird, Brown-throated Sunbird, Sahul Sunbird, Black Sunbird and etc.
Most tourists who travel to Minahasa highland for their birdwatching holiday could combine birding tour in Sonder with other trips to Lake Linow, Mount Mahawu, Tangkoko Nature Reserve, Temboan Hill, Naun River. The total duration of the birding tour in this Minahasa peninsula is around 7 days/ 6 nights.
