The highland of Minahasa is a must see destination for visitors who love to see various kinds of flowers. There are bougainvillea, dahlia, alamanda, orchid, hibiscus, heliconia, canna, plumeria, and a lot more.
There are also villagers who grow flowers in big pots along the roadside to attract buyers especially from Manado city and other towns across Minahasa peninsula.

| Blue Lotus Flower |
There are ponds and lakes in Minahasa highland where visitors could see such flower as the Blue Lotus (Nymphaea nouchali var. caerulea). This aquatic plant has got flower whose petals are light purple or blue. The pistil of the flower is mostly yellow.

Sacred Lotus is an aquatic flower plant that grows in ponds or lakes. We could find it when taking a flower tour around Minahasa highland. In Buddhism tradition, the flower symbolizes purity, enlightenment, spiritual rebirth. Some parts of the flower is edible or have got medicinal functions.

The above flower is Impatients. I saw it near the crater of Mount Mahawu. It grows on the sides of walking paths from parking area to the top of the volcano. The volcano is located near Tomohon town in Minahasa highland. Every year, local government of Tomohon conduct flower parade along the main street of Tomohon as a way to promote tourism in the area.

Flower plants like to grow in places where there is water. The above Yellow Cosmos grow near a waterfall in Subdistrict Sonder of Minahasa regency. In Indonesia, young shoot of the plant is eaten as ingredients in salad.
Grass in open land is sometimes covered by White Rain Lily. I also saw the following in the waterfall area. It is also called Autumn Zephyrlily. The name of Zephyranthes flower is derived from two words: Zephyrus (the Greek god of the West Wind) and anthos meaning flower. It was William Herbert (1778-1847), a British Botanist who gave this flower its genus name.

In general, when we explore natural places in Minahasa highland to find flowers, we will also see various kinds of butterflies such as The Clipper, Common Birdwing, Blanchard Ghost, Blanchard Tree Nymp, Sacred Tabby, Lime Swallow, Meyer's Jay butterfly. So, this flower tour also enabless us to
watch butterflies of Sulawesi island.
